Here’s a little old-school anecdote from the late ’90s, when Mumbai’s nightlife had a very different vibe. Long before the well-known Olive restaurant at Pali became the hotspot, there used to be another popular hangout nearby. It was a club located above the Shatranj Napoli restaurant, and the open space near the paan shop outside often served as a casual meeting point. That spot had seen its share of celebrity sightings and memorable encounters.
Back in those days, the scene was quite different—large mobile phones were considered stylish, smoking indoors was common, and someone ordering wine often drew attention. Celebrities frequently dropped by these places, and their presence usually caused a lot of excitement among the crowd.
But sometimes, people tried to draw attention to themselves even when no one was particularly interested. One evening, the youngest of the Khan brothers, Sohail Khan, reportedly attempted just that. The story goes that the club was packed and there was some confusion over seating. During the exchange, an irritated and possibly inebriated Sohail reportedly turned to the person beside him and delivered the classic line: “Do you know who I am? I’m Sohail Khan.”
Instead of the reaction he expected, the response came back much louder and firmer: “Do you know who I am?” The person replying Ranjit Bindra (Hospitality Entrepreneur): Founder of Bastian Hospitality in India
Apparently, Sohail wasn’t familiar with him at the time. Soon after, he was reportedly pulled aside and advised not to create trouble there. The situation ended quickly, with Sohail laughing it off and leaving the place.
As many who followed Mumbai’s nightlife in that era know, such incidents were not exactly rare.
