The casting story of Munnabhai MBBS is almost as entertaining as the film itself. Director Rajkumar Hirani originally envisioned Anil Kapoor as Munna, Rani Mukerji as Suman, Sajid Khan as Circuit, and Amrish Puri as Dr. Asthana.
When Anil and Rani were unavailable, Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai were considered. SRK even contributed creative ideas to the script before a back injury forced him to leave. Vivek Oberoi was approached next but declined the role, paving the way for Sanjay Dutt, who transformed Munna into one of Bollywood’s most beloved characters.
The role of Circuit also went through several changes before Arshad Warsi came on board. The character was originally named Farooque Khujli, but Warsi suggested “Short Circuit,” which was eventually shortened to the iconic “Circuit.”
Another masterstroke was the casting of Boman Irani as Dr. Asthana after Amrish Puri passed on the role. The film became Irani’s breakthrough and launched him as one of Bollywood’s most dependable character actors.
The female lead saw multiple changes too. After Rani Mukerji, Aishwarya Rai, and Tabu exited, Gracy Singh landed the role of Dr. Suman.
Adding to the film’s emotional appeal, Sunil Dutt came out of retirement to play Munna’s father, marking the only time he shared screen space with his son Sanjay Dutt. Looking back, a series of rejections, injuries, and scheduling conflicts ended up creating the perfect cast for a modern Bollywood classic.
