Word going around is that a much-revered industry veteran isn’t thrilled about the fate of three of his upcoming projects, all of which are reportedly being lined up for direct digital premieres.

The shift isn’t entirely surprising given how the pandemic upended theatrical business, prompting producers—especially those backing relatively modest ventures—to cash out via OTT deals rather than gamble on uncertain box office prospects.

The real concern, insiders say, is what happens when cinemas finally return to full capacity. With a backlog of big-ticket entertainers waiting to claim the most lucrative release windows, smaller films risk being squeezed out completely. In that kind of crowd, these mid-scale titles would likely struggle to secure visibility, let alone strong earnings.

Ironically, a streaming debut could give these films a wider footprint overall. But there’s a catch. The actor in question still commands a loyal following in India’s smaller towns—regions where OTT access remains patchy at best. That’s where the worry lies: a purely digital release might bypass a significant chunk of his core audience.

Apparently, the star has been nudging producers to lock in a television premiere alongside the online drop, ensuring the films eventually reach viewers beyond the metros. It’s a practical ask, especially for someone whose appeal extends well beyond urban centres.

Those in the know add that the frustration isn’t just about release strategy. The ongoing uncertainty around film shoots resuming has only added to the unease, making the road ahead feel increasingly unpredictable.

Guess:

Big B (Gulabo Sitabo, Jhund and Chehre)
