Madhur Bhandarkar’s infamous case with Preeti Jain had made headlines.
In the early 2000s, aspiring actress Preeti Jain accused filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar of sexually exploiting and raping her by promising marriage and film roles. Bhandarkar denied the allegations, claiming their relationship was consensual.
While the case was ongoing, the story took a dramatic turn. In 2005, police alleged that Jain had hired people linked to gangster Arun Gawli to kill Bhandarkar as revenge. The alleged murder plot was never carried out, but Jain was arrested and charged with criminal conspiracy.
Years later, the rape case against Bhandarkar was quashed by the courts, while Jain was convicted in 2017 for conspiring to have him killed and sentenced to three years in prison, though she was granted bail pending appeal.
In short, a case that began with allegations of sexual exploitation ended with the accuser being convicted in a murder conspiracy case against the same filmmaker.
