When films fail at the box office, tensions between filmmakers and producers can sometimes spill out into the open. Something similar is said to have happened recently involving the director of a multi-starrer comedy that did poorly in theatres.
The film featured a large ensemble cast with several big names, and the makers reportedly tried every commercial formula to make it work—remixed versions of classic songs, plenty of comedy, and a star-studded lineup. Despite these efforts, the movie failed to perform and ended up as a major box-office disappointment.
According to sources in the trade, the director later approached the producer to collect the remainder of his agreed payment. However, the producer allegedly refused, pointing out that the film had resulted in heavy financial losses—reportedly around ₹40 crore.
This reportedly led to a heated exchange between the two, with the director said to have reacted angrily in front of others present at the meeting. The producer, however, is believed to have stayed calm and stood by his decision not to release the remaining payment. The disagreement has since escalated, with the director reportedly warning the producer after the confrontation.
Industry insiders claim this isn’t the first time the filmmaker has had a falling out with a producer. Because of the recent setback, it’s also being said that his remuneration for future projects may drop significantly—from around ₹15 crore earlier to offers closer to ₹3 crore.
